Something is desperately wrong in a nation where political anger gets to the point that a U.S. Congressman is shot, just because he is a Republican. That is what happened to House Majority Whip, Steve Scalise, this morning.
Together with other Congressmen, Rep. Scalise was preparing to practice for a charity baseball game against a team of Democrats. The game has been a playful annual event for over 100 years. This morning, however, a Bernie Sanders supporter apparently targeted the men, asking someone on the way which political party was playing on the field. James Hodgkinson then proceeded to shoot Rep. Scalise, along with three others, including two Capitol policemen. If not for the Capitol police there with the Congressman, the outcome may have been far worse.
Rep. Scalise was hit in the hip and is in critical condition. Three others were wounded. James Hodgkinson was killed. Such a tragedy over a political divide.
The shooting brings to a head the anger of those on the political left who hate President Trump and the Republican party. Inflamed by liberal media, the divide is growing dangerous. We hope that this is a wake-up call to defuse the rage and verbal and emotional attacks.
The nation needs healing. The nation needs prayer:
- Pray for God's grace and healing to touch the lives of those hurt physically and emotionally in today's shooting, including the family members of every victim.
- Repent of any anger you may harbor, no matter how small, for the political party in opposition to the one you identify with.
- Now, intercede for the anger, even rage, and mocking between the political parties by media, celebrities, businessmen, other politicians, and private individuals to stop!
- Increase your prayers for a John 17 unity in Congress. Democrats pulled together and prayed for their Republican brothers earlier today. May both sides use this situation as a wonderful excuse to start to model respect and cooperation with one another.
